What is Money
Matters?
"Local
U3As are learning co-operatives which draw upon the knowledge,
experience and skills of their own members to organise and provide
interest groups in accordance with the wishes of the membership. The
teachers learn and the learners teach."
So says the U3A and this is how Money Matters approaches money and Finance. If you are interested in savings or investment, reducing bills or simply managing money, this is what we are here for.
What do we do?
A
typical Money Matters meeting could consist of:
Airing problems, press cuttings, questions, suggestions about anything to do with money or finance.
Detailed discussions about a topic or topics put forward by members of the group.
Research by group members into topics - perhaps arising from discussions.
A presentation prepared by a group member with a particular knowledge of some topic.
Ongoing examination of particular areas of interest - for example the performance of a virtual investment portfolio.
Talks from time to time by external speakers who may be persuaded to visit.
We are on the lookout for likely external speakers who could provide us with insights into particular financial areas - examples may be:
Banks
Building Societies
Citizens Advice Bureau
Dept. of Work & Pensions
Local Authorities
Stockbrokers
Investment providers
etc.
Part way through our meetings we break for tea, coffee and a chat.
Is there a beginning
or an end?
Members
can join Money Matters at any time. There is no set syllabus nor
formal conclusion to the learning process - we just keep going.
What Topics do we
cover?
There
are no holds barred and any topic which may be loosely connected with
money is fair game. Group members are free to raise topics and may
even decide to research a topic in depth for their own benefit and
for the benefit of the rest of us. Here is an A-Z of possible
subjects which could be visited and revisited:
