SINGING
FOR PLEASURE
The group meet every other Tuesday 10.00 -12.00 at the home of our pianist Monica Powell in Leonard Stanley. Some of us can read music, some can't but we all help each other and have gelled as a group. We sing all sorts, rounds, spirituals, songs from the shows, and more serious items, some in harmony and some in unison.
We do not generally perform but we have sung at an Old Peoples Day Centre, a sheltered accommodation complex, and also for the U3A at the exhibition day on September 6th and at the cream tea in 2007. We have taken part in two U3A singing days which are comprised of a number of U3A singing groups from round about. Each group sings a few items on their own, and we all merge for a joint item. This year we took part in the Vivaldi Gloria, which proved to be quite a challenge, and involved a lot of practises at my house. It was great fun to sing with so many other people (over 100). This year we will be doing Elgar's 7 Anthems.
The group had small beginnings. It started long before I joined. Originally there were just a few people and they sang unaccompanied for two years, so it goes to show that great things can happen. For a long time we have been full to capacity, but recently two vacancies have arisen, one of which may soon be filled.
